• Friends of Deer Hollow Farm Celebrates 21 Years!

By Jenise Henrikson, May 6, 2015

Friends of Deer Hollow Farm, an all-volunteer, 501(c)(3) non-profit supporting the Farm, is celebrating its 21st anniversary this month. We’ve raised more than $1 million for the Farm since our founding, and have had the honor of welcoming more than 30 local volunteers to serve on our Board of Directors since 1994.

Over the years, our budget has increased more than tenfold and is now more than $100,000 annually. This increased budget allows us to do more for Deer Hollow Farm, and allows The Farm to do more for our community.

Part of the reason for our increased budget is because of our diversified fund raising program, which includes:

    • Grant requests to foundations, corporations, and community and government organizations
    • Fund-raising events at the Farm (Tours and Ohlone Day)
    • Farm-related merchandise
    • Soliciting individual donations

About 90% of Friends funding comes from grants and individual donors.

Friends would like to thank the following for their generous support:

    • The David and Lucile Packard Foundation
    • The Brin Wojcicki Foundation
    • Mountain View Rotary
    • Mountain View Kiwanis
    • Los Altos Community Foundation
    • The Town of Los Altos Hills
    • City of Cupertino
    • The Merrimac Fund

We also like to thank hundreds of generous individual donors.

Friends donors have the opportunity to designate where they want their funds to go: improvement projects, field trip scholarships, animal care, Farm operations, or where most needed.

Since 2008, Friends donors have funded more than $100,000 in Farm Improvement projects. These projects are recommended by the Farm staff and include:

    • Chicken Coop
    • Duck Pond, House, and Egg-Washing Station
    • Underground Sweathouse in the Replica Ohlone Village
    • Covered Cow Milking Demonstration Stand
    • Goat & Cow Milk Processing Room
    • Animal Transport Trailer

The emphasis of these projects is on making the Farm animals, volunteers, and visitors safer and more comfortable while maintaining the historical feel of the Farm. We would also like to thank Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District Staff, who have helped build many of the projects.
