• Come Teach at the Farm!

By Jenise Henrikson, August 8, 2016

Deer Hollow Farm needs docents to teach the 5,000 elementary school students who come to the Farm on field trips to learn about the Farm, Life Sciences and Ohlone culture.

An Open House for Docents will be held at the Farm Tuesday, September 20 from 10 am to noon. You’ll learn about the Farm’s school year program including class curriculum and docent responsibilities. A tour of the Farm and replica Ohlone Village is included.

Docents provide outdoor learning three mornings a week for small student groups of 10 or less. Classes range from two to four hours, serving children from kindergarten through fourth grade. Docents sign up for the days and classes they wish to teach. A minimum of two classes a month is required.

    Topics include:

    • Visits with the animals in their pens to learn what the farmer does for the animals and what the animals provide us
    • Sheep and goat care and wool products with activities such as carding the wool and learning about weaving
    • Wilderness including hiking through various habitats and learning the value of open space
    • Native American Ohlone culture and history taught in the Farm’s replica Ohlone Village with hands-on activities such as acorn pounding
    • For directions and more information, contact the Farm at (650) 903-6430, ext 3 or email: deerhollowfarm@mountainview.gov.

Please RSVP for the Docent Open House by September 12.
